Does anyone else like to do those trolley tours when visiting a city? The only one I had been on before Boston was a double decker hop on / hop off bus tour in New York City years ago in January. Brrr, it was so cold. But fun. So when I saw that Boston also had trolley tours, I knew I had to do one.
The hotel recommended the Old Town Trolley Tour for the attractions I was interested in, so within a few minutes of getting to the hotel, I was taking their shuttle to the subway to get my ticket to spend my first day in Boston on a trolley checking out the city!
Read on for my pros and cons of the Boston Old Town Trolley Tour.
1. The stand is right along the street at the Aquarium subway stop. It is easy to purchase a ticket right there and then get on.
2. If you buy a combination ticket to the Boston Tea Party attraction, you get a few dollars off. This made me decide to do the Boston Tea Party attraction because who doesn't like a little bit of a bargain.
3. You can sit anywhere. I chose the front because I wanted to be able to hear the driver and ask a question if needed.
4. If you forget to grab a brochure with all of the trolley's stops from the stand (I did and you'll need this!), they are right on the bus in a stand up front. The brochures are very clear about the stops and they give short descriptions of the attractions at these various stops, which was great. Having a brochure was useful to look at on the trolley to see what was coming up and whether I wanted to get off.

5. If you go on a nice day (70s-80s degrees F and sunny like I did), this will make it soo enjoyable. The windows will be down and it will feel awesome cruising around in this weather.
6. I had an empty bus seat next to me when I first got on but when I was looking out the window as some people got on at a stop, I heard the words "Is this seat taken?" And ladies, he was cute! So even though the drivers narrate as you are going along, there's always opportunities to meet people.
8. There are soo many choices as far as the stops go - 13 of them. It is 2.5 hours to make it back to your first stop so this is a great attraction to make a day or two of!
9. The bus seats are cloth and comfortable and the windows for the seeing the sights are large.
10. The driver pointed out various landmarks and attractions in the city, like construction on a park and the Cheers bar which was interesting as we were riding along. There was enough time in between stops to see things and learn about the city, which was nice.
There were so many pros to the Boston Old Town Trolley Tour but what about the cons?
1. I heard most of what the driver was saying as he was narrating but not all (and I was sitting up front). This may have been the cost of having the windows down (which I really enjoyed and wouldn't change) or it could have been the individual driver but there are different drivers so my advice would be to just hop off if you want a different driver because there are always buses coming by to pick up passengers at the various stops.
2. I would have like to have done more stops. I was only off at two out of thirteen. I started a little after 12 and went until the end of the day, which brings me to my next point.
2. The last stop is at 5 p.m. I think this is too early especially in the summer. It would be nice to have it extended to 7 p.m. or even 8 p.m.
I guess my point is I really enjoyed this experience and definitely could have spent more time. I recommend it for first time visitors and maybe even second time visitors who want an easy way to see more sights they didn't get to see the first time ;)
